Shop Tadashi Shoji’s Formal Dresses for Any Event

Formal dresses from Tadahi Shoji include a multitude of styles for a variety of events, such as auctions, fundraisers, weddings, and black tie events. Of course, you don’t need a party or even a specific reason to dress up. Dressing up makes life more exciting and boosts your confidence.

But for events that have a dress code, you want to be ready with the perfect dress! With varying sleeve lengths, dazzling colors, intriguing necklines, and more, Tadashi Shoji has the perfect dressfor you.

Formal Dress Styles

Different dress styles suit different occasions. Opt for more coverage at conservative events, like work or family functions. Break out the plunging necklines and high slits for a night of glamor. Asymmetrical necklines, such as an off the shoulder look, splits the difference between wild and conservative. A V-neck allows for a beautiful pendant necklace to take center stage.

For weddings, refer to the dress code noted on the invitation. As far as colors go, any color is welcome for wedding guests as long as it’s not a shade of white. For all formal events, you might consider coordinating fabrics or colors with your date, partner, or friend group in attendance for dazzling photos.

One of our favorite accents in formal wear is the dolman sleeve. This sleeve drapes loosely over the upper arm and shoulder, then tapers and fits snugly at the wrists. It gives a similar look to draping a stole around your shoulders. This is a stunning winter dress look that keeps you stylish and comfortable.

Long sleeve dresses are not only beautiful, they are practical. They reduce the need for a wrap, cardigan, or blazer to keep warm in air conditioning or cold temperatures. Long sleeves allow you to keep warm without the need to incorporate other attire, and without changing the shape of your silhouette.

However, if you plan on dancing the night away, a long sleeve dress might be a little too warm. For dance-til-you-drop affairs like weddings, dresses that allow for maximum movement are best. Instead of a tight-fitting cut that restricts leg movement, choose a dress that floats away from the body. You won’t regret your choice when twirling on the dancefloor!

Formal Dress FAQs

Not sure your event is considered formal? Can’t choose between short or long formal dresses? We’ve listed answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about formal wear.

● What is considered a formal dress?

Formal dresses for women are widely considered evening wear. They are typically floor length and include ball gowns and gala dresses. There are several different dress codes within the umbrella of “formal wear.” White tie dress code is the most elegant and extravagant: on these occasions, such as a red carpet or state dinner, go for voluminous skirts and eye-catching designs.

Black tie affairs, just a tad less formal than white tie occasions, also encourage floor length formal gowns. Finally, a business formal dress code calls for a more corporate look – no gowns necessary. Business formal events are the place to wear a chic and sophisticated jumpsuit or a modest, professional-looking dress.

● Can a formal dress be short?

Mini dresses are not considered formal wear. But cocktail dresses that fall at or below the knee are appropriate for some formal occasions. The location of your event and guidelines on the invitation will inform you about expected hemline lengths. If the invitation states, “black tie optional,” this is a touch less formal than black tie – while elegant floor length gowns are welcome at these events, so are shorter hemlines.

● What fabric is considered formal?

Traditionally formal fabrics include corded embroidery, crepe, embroidery, jacquard, lace, sequins/paillettes, velvet, satin, and silk. While Tadashi Shoji dresses are well-loved for their stretchy jersey linings, steer away from external fabrics made of light cotton or stretchy cotton blends for formal occasions. For example, sweater dresses are not considered formal.

● Can I use accessories to dress up a dress?

Absolutely! The right jewelry can help elevate an already fancy dress. A dress that is mid-calf or longer can be further dressed up with tasteful rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, heels, or even hairpieces like a tiara or studded hair clip. Diamonds complement all dress colors, while gemstones, gold, and silver jewelry requires some color coordination.

● Does Tadashi Shoji make custom dresses?

We do not design brand new custom dresses from scratch, but you may place a special order for one of our existing designs. For example, if one of our black formal dresses is out of stock in your size, we can make it in a different color, fabric, or size if it is out of stock. Please allow eight weeks to process your custom order. Special orders are final sale and include an additional fee.
